This article tells the story behind the city of Upper Nazareth, officially established in 1962 as part of David Ben Gurion’s efforts to create a Jewish majority in the predominantly Arab region of the Galilee. Despite a huge wave of Jewish immigrants from the Soviet Union beginning in the 1970s, Upper Nazareth has remained a mixed city, with 25% of its population being Arab. Since this article was published in December 2018, Upper Nazareth has officially changed its name to Nof Hagalil (« View of the Galilee), following years of confusion between the largely Jewish city and its Arab counterpart, Nazareth, childhood home of Jesus and a popular destination for tourists and Christian pilgrims.
