Northern Israel’s Misgav Region: Progressing Towards Sustainable Living

The Misgav Regional Council is home to 22,000 people, and comprises 35 small towns. The region is noted for the way that Jewish and non-Jewish communities live side-by-side. Environmental awareness permeates every aspect of daily life and long term planning in the Misgav region. Half of the Misgav’s 221 acres are reserved as green space. The landscaping and construction are environmentally friendly and suited to the areas local topography and natural surroundings.

KKL-JNF Australia enabled the development of the Misgav Regional Sustainability Education Center, as part of its activities in developing and supporting environmental education in Israel. The center comprises an ecological garden and learning space that serves the local community and visitors. The latest developmental stage included expanding the center using green construction to build two classrooms. Education focuses on water and its wise use, exemplified by the rainwater harvesting system that was installed on the classroom roof. The center serves as a hub for ecotourism and environmental education, benefiting the western Galilee.
