This short clip (2:27) put out by CBN News introduces the ancient Ethiopian Jewish festival of Sigd. A celebration of God’s giving the Torah to the Jewish people, Sigd has served as a symbol for Ethiopian Jews as they dreamed of returning to Jerusalem for hundreds — thousands — of years. What was there celebrated on mountaintops is now celebrated in Jerusalem at Armon HaNetziv, the Haas Promenade that overlooks the Temple Mount. Sigd is a day of prayer and fasting, followed by a festive meal at sundown. In 2008, it became recognized as a national holiday in Israel and has even become something of a political event, drawing notable politicians such as the Prime Minister and various ministry heads.
